And the date has arrived. Finally Windows 8.1 is available to everyone. If you have a Windows 8 PC / Tablet than you are eligible to a FREE upgrade.

If you are looking to update your computer, and don't know how you can update it, just follow the below steps

Keep in mind, Windows 8.1 update is not available via Windows Update, you have to download it from Microsoft Store. But to be able to see Windows 8.1 update in the store your Windows 8 device must be update. Below are the steps based on your current Windows:

Updating to Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1

You can download the update for free from the Windows Store. You'll be able to keep your personal files, but you'll need to reinstall your apps. Make sure you have any original installation media that might be required for apps that were not installed from the Windows Store.

  1. On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store. Doing this first will make it so that you can see the progress of the installation once it starts.

  2. After opening the Store, return to this page.

  3. Click to download Windows 8.1 via Windows Store.(Click on Windows Icon,or press the Windows Key in your keyboard, then select/click in to  Windows Store icon)

From Windows 8.1 Preview

If you installed Windows 8.1 Preview by booting from ISO media, you can update to the final version of Windows 8.1 Pro using the Windows Store, but your system won't activate until you buy a Windows 8.1 license and product key. You can do this by following the instructions when you activate your system, or by purchasing a DVD of Windows 8.1 Pro.

Get Windows 8.1 Step by Step

Ready? Now you can download the free update from the Windows Store.

  1. Go to the Start screen, and tap or click the Store tile.

Store tile on the Start screen
  2. In the Store, tap or click the Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1 update. if you don't see the update on the Store home screen,

  3. Tap or click Download.

  4. The update will download and install in the background while you use your PC to do other things. The installer will check to make sure you have enough disk space, that your apps and devices will work with Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, and that you have all the required updates.

In some cases, the installer might find something you need to take care of before you can continue installing the update. If so, you'll see a message telling you what you need to do.

If you can't find the update in Windows Store ?

Although the Windows 8.1 update is downloaded and installed from the Store, your PC needs another update, KB 2871389, before Windows 8.1 becomes available to you in the Store.

If you’re using Windows Update to get automatic updates, KB 2871389 will be downloaded and installed automatically.

If you’ve turned off automatic updates, or if your PC is so new that automatic updates haven't been downloaded yet, or if you’d rather not wait for Windows Update to do this automatically, you can go to Windows Update and install KB 2871839 manually.

To install the update you need

  1. Open Windows Update by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or, if you're using a mouse, pointing to the lower-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer up), tapping or clicking Settings, tapping or clicking Change PC settings, and then tapping or clicking Update and recovery.

  2. Tap or click Check now, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your PC.

  3. If updates are found, tap or click View details.

  4. In the list of available updates, select KB 2871389, and any other updates you want to install, and then tap or click Install.

  5. Read and accept the license terms, and then tap or click Finish, if the updates you’ve selected require it.

If you still can't update wo Windows 8.1 !

Make sure your Windows 8 is not one of the below:

Windows 8 Enterprise

  • Editions of Windows 8 Pro that are installed by enterprises using KMS activation

  • Editions of Windows 8 that are installed using an MSDN ISO, and activated using multiple activation keys

If you installed Windows 8 using an MSDN ISO, you might be able to install Windows 8.1 using a similar ISO from MSDN. Otherwise, you might be able to perform a clean install.
