25 Years of Cybersecurity and IT Leadership
A veteran CISO reflects on a 25-year career in cybersecurity and IT, from early days in a German computer store to leading global security teams. Highlights awards and experiences with Microsoft, Cisco, and more.
From Local IT Shop to Global CISO
The world of technology has always been a realm of constant evolution. My own journey in this dynamic field began over 25 years ago, starting with hands-on experience in a local computer store in Germany in the mid-1990s. From those early days of building and repairing PCs, I progressed through roles in IT support, IT direction, and eventually, to C-suite leadership in one of the world’s largest banks.
This path has led me to my current role as a Chief Cybersecurity Strategist, working to protect organizations from the ever-present and evolving threats in the digital landscape.
This post reflects on key milestones, the invaluable lessons learned, and the recognition received along the way. It’s a testament to the power of continuous learning and adaptation in the ever-changing world of IT and cybersecurity.
The Foundation Years
My career didn’t begin in a boardroom or a high-tech office; it started with the practical, hands-on work of building and troubleshooting computers in a local German computer shop. This early experience provided an invaluable foundation in understanding how technology works – and how it can fail. It instilled in me a problem-solving mindset and a deep appreciation for the user experience.
From there, I progressed through roles in IT support, steadily expanding my knowledge and skills. This foundational period taught me the importance of customer service, clear communication, and the need to constantly adapt to new technologies. The logical progression to managing IT departments, first as IT Director at The Bright Group, where I led the creation of international IT systems, and then to found and scale CEO IT Training & Solutions, that grew to a multi million dollar business and eventually to a successful acquisition.
Building Expertise and Leading Teams: CEO IT Training & Solutions and KEMP Technologies
The next decade of my career was defined by entrepreneurship and leadership. As Managing Director of CEO IT Training & Solutions, I had the opportunity to build a company from the ground up, partnering with global organizations like Microsoft, Cisco, EC-Council, the United Nations, and NATO. We delivered cutting-edge technology solutions, cybersecurity training programs, and digital transformation initiatives to enterprise, government, and academic clients worldwide. This experience honed my skills in business development, strategic partnerships, and delivering high-quality training and consulting services.
Following the successful acquisition of CEO IT Training & Solutions, I took on the role of Regional Director at KEMP Technologies. This role challenged me to establish and grow the company’s presence in the Asian market, building a team from one many employee within a year. I focused on developing tailored solutions for enterprise clients, including large financial institutions, telecom providers, and government agencies, and achieved significant revenue growth and market dominance through strategic partnerships and targeted go-to-market strategies. These experiences solidified my understanding of the global technology landscape and the unique challenges faced by organizations in different regions.
The Microsoft Years: Advisory, Consultancy, and the Circle of Excellence
Joining Microsoft as a Cyber Security Architect was a pivotal moment in my career. It provided the opportunity to work with some of the brightest minds in the industry and to advise government agencies, financial institutions, and enterprise clients on security strategy, architecture design, and risk management. I had the privilege of managing multiple incident response cases globally for Fortune 500 companies and government agencies, leading efforts in threat containment, root cause analysis, and recovery.
Contributing to the growth of Microsoft’s cybersecurity service business across the Middle East, Europe, and Africa, and even extending support to clients in New Zealand and Australia, was incredibly rewarding. The recognition I received with the Microsoft Circle of Excellence Platinum Club Award was a significant highlight, acknowledging exceptional performance and contributions to customer success.

This period reinforced the importance of continuous learning and collaboration, as I trained and mentored Microsoft’s sales and technical teams on security topics and emerging threats. I also collaborated with Microsoft’s global product and security teams to refine security services and develop tailored solutions for high-profile clients.
Leading Cybersecurity at Scale: CISO Roles at Secunia and Standard Chartered Bank
My passion for protecting organizations from cyber threats led me to take on CISO roles, first at Secunia (EMT Holding) and then at Standard Chartered Bank. At Secunia, I led the review and approval of business-critical policies and controls, strengthening customers’ security posture through proactive attack surface management and threat intelligence services. I also focused on building a high-performing team of cybersecurity professionals, fostering continuous development through training and mentorship programs.
At Standard Chartered Bank, as Regional CISO and Managing Director, I led cybersecurity initiatives across the Middle East, Africa, and Pakistan. This involved collaborating with central banks and regulators in over 23 countries to ensure compliance with local cybersecurity regulations and standards. I developed and oversaw a comprehensive information security strategy, established a Security Champion Program, and significantly increased security awareness across regional teams

These experiences solidified my understanding of the complexities of managing cybersecurity in large, global organizations with diverse regulatory requirements.
Strategic Guidance and Community Recognition: Xcitium and Beyond
Currently, as Chief Cybersecurity Strategist at Xcitium, I provide strategic risk guidance for IT projects and serve as an expert advisor to executive leadership on information privacy and security. I’ve led business continuity planning efforts, implemented remote work policies, and spearheaded cloud security initiatives across multi-cloud environments, significantly reducing the external attack surface. I also advise top-tier global clients on enhancing their endpoint security posture, implementing Zero Trust policies, and improving ransomware resilience.
Throughout my career, I’ve been deeply committed to sharing knowledge and contributing to the cybersecurity community. Being recognized as a Microsoft Regional Director (RD) & Most Valuable Professional (MVP), a Cisco Champion, and being inducted into the CISO MAG Hall of Fame are honors that I deeply value. These acknowledgements reflect the importance of collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning in our ever-evolving field. The Best Banking CISO award by Global CIO Forum, and being named a top technology leader by IDC/CIO Online represent critical junctures in my jounrey.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Cybersecurity
The cybersecurity landscape is in constant flux. Emerging technologies like AI, IoT, and quantum computing will create both unprecedented opportunities and significant security challenges. My focus remains on staying ahead of these developments, helping organizations navigate the complexities of the digital future, and building a more secure and resilient world. Key areas of focus include:
- Proactive Threat Intelligence: Shifting from reactive to proactive security, anticipating and preventing attacks.
- Zero Trust Architectures: Implementing security models based on the principle of “never trust, always verify.”
- Cloud Security: Securing increasingly complex and distributed cloud environments.
- AI-Powered Security: Leveraging AI to enhance threat detection, response, and automation.
- The Human Factor: Empowering individuals to be the strongest link in the security chain through education and awareness.
- Adversarial Simulations: Building and leading dedicated Red and Blue Teams
