Microsoft Azure roadshow -Erdal Ozkaya

Its announced that CISO, Erdal Ozkaya was among the key speakers at Microsoft Azure roadshow that was held recently at Abu Dhabi and Bahrain. He will also be addressing the similar roadshow in Kuwait on 2nd June 2015.

Azure is the Microsoft cloud platform, which nothing but a growing collection of integrated services—compute, storage, data, networking, and app that help businesses move faster, do more, and save money. It is the only major cloud platform ranked by Gartner as an industry leader for both infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS). This powerful combination of managed and unmanaged services lets enterprises build, deploy, and manage applications as per their choice. It runs on a growing global network of Microsoft-managed datacenters across 19 regions, giving a wide range of options for running applications and ensuring great performance.

During the roadshow, Ozkaya made a presentation, and discussed the details about Microsoft Azure Security at length. He explained the fundamentals of Azure security, including threat defense, network security, access control, and data protection as well as the commitments Azure makes to safeguard the privacy of customer data.

Expressing his delight about his participation at the roadshow, Ozkaya, stated, “It is a confluence of like-minded who have come together share their experiences and learn from each other. Roadshow like these help the whole eco system- enthusiast, developers, partners, and customers all stand to gain.

In his presentation, Ozkaya discussed enterprise mobility, BYOD, Software as a service (SaaS), besides talking about cloud security and shared the best practices to stay secure in a computing world. In the end, he had an open forum to discuss the various security aspects with the audience.

CISO Insight

Having worked at Microsoft and held the MVP award since 2009, I have watched the security ecosystem evolve from standalone antivirus into one of the most comprehensive platforms available. For organisations invested in the Microsoft ecosystem, leveraging native capabilities is one of the highest-ROI security decisions a CISO can make.

The Microsoft Security Ecosystem: A CISO Perspective

Microsoft security now encompasses identity management (Entra ID), cloud security (Defender for Cloud), SIEM and SOAR (Sentinel), endpoint detection and response (Defender for Endpoint), email security (Defender for Office 365), and DLP across the entire Microsoft 365 ecosystem. For organisations with significant Microsoft investments, this integrated approach provides visibility and control that would require multiple third-party vendors to replicate. The strategic advantage is integration — when identity, endpoint, email, and cloud security share a common data model, correlation and automated response become dramatically simpler.

Practical Considerations for Security Leaders

While the Microsoft stack offers compelling integration, CISOs should evaluate rigorously. Key considerations include licensing complexity (features distributed across E3, E5, and add-ons), need for Microsoft-skilled personnel, vendor concentration risk, and coverage gaps for non-Microsoft platforms. The most effective approach is often Microsoft-first supplemented by specialist tools where capabilities are less mature. Independent evaluations like MITRE ATT&CK assessments provide objective benchmarks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Microsoft security stack sufficient standalone?

For predominantly Microsoft environments with E5, the native stack covers most enterprise requirements. Organisations with significant non-Microsoft infrastructure may need supplementary solutions. Evaluate against your specific threat model.

What Microsoft licence provides comprehensive security?

Microsoft 365 E5 provides Defender for Endpoint P2, Defender for Office 365 P2, Entra ID P2, and Sentinel entitlements. E3 includes basic features. Many start with E3 and add components based on priorities.
